Sally Ride Science Announces Fall Festivals and Events
Sally Ride Science Festivals
Sally Ride Science Festivals bring together hundreds of girls in fifth through eighth grades for a day of science and socializing. The fall festival line-up kicked off Sept. 29 in Silicon Valley, Calif. Subsequent festivals include: Oct. 6 at University of Alabama, Oct. 13 at California State University, Los Angeles; Oct. 27 at Rice University in Houston; and Nov. 10 at the University of San Diego. Each festival features an inspiring talk by an astronaut; discovery workshops with local scientists; workshops for parents and teachers on ways to support girls’ interests in science and math; and a street fair with hands-on science activities, booths, food and music. The festivals run from 11 a.m. to 4:15 p.m and advance registration is required. The registration fee is $18. For more information, visit http://www.sallyridefestivals.com.
“Join the Journey: Celebrating Teachers” Educator Conference
This month, Sally Ride Science and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), in collaboration with Northrop Grumman, invite teachers to attend “Join the Journey: Celebrating Teachers” on Oct. 16 and 17 at the Marriott at the Renaissance Center in Detroit. The two-day educator conference will highlight teacher and astronaut Barbara Morgan’s first space flight on STS-118, provide an overview of the shuttle mission’s educational objectives, and illustrate how teachers can bring real-world science into the classroom. It will feature a presentation by Morgan, hands-on workshops, and a panel discussion on “Visions of Teaching and Learning in 2020” with the leaders of national professional education organizations, among other events. The registration fee is $50; registration ends Oct. 10. For more information, visit http://www.sallyridescience.com/conferences.
