Sally Ride Science Connects the Classroom to the Working World with the New Blog Topic, "Science Careers"
The “Science Careers” blog provides teachers with innovative ways to connect the classroom to the “real world” and discuss the many ways science is used in everyday life. Teachers can introduce students to the myriad of science careers available today, and encourage students to think about their own interests and future goals.
The first blog entry, “Scientists: Geniuses or Hard Workers?” is authored by Catherine Ivey Lee, a journalist and writer for Sally Ride Science who has interviewed numerous scientists for the company’s educational publications. In this blog entry, Ivey Lee dispels the notion that people are either born scientists or not. Using real-life examples, she explains that while some scientists were whizzes at math and science as young children, others worked very hard to succeed — and love what they do. She also emphasizes the critical role teachers play in encouraging children to stick with it, even when things get tough.
Subsequent postings to the “Science Careers” blog will be authored by Dr. Karen Flammer and Julie Barncastle. Flammer is a space physicist at the University of California, San Diego, and one of the founders of Sally Ride Science. Barncastle is one of the leaders of the Sally Ride Science after school program at Arrowhead Elementary, a NASA Explorer School in Phoenix, Arizona.
